WHAT NOT TO BRING TO COLLEGE

for college it can be hard to decide what to bring and what to leave at home. I definitely struggled with leaving stuff at home because I love my stuff and (especially with clothes) want to always have options! so without further a do, lets look at a few things I shouldn't have brought to college. lol. *disclaimer*: this is solely based on my personal experience :)

1. decorations

when decorating my college dorm I definitely think that a few decorations are a good idea. however, too many things on the walls can make the small room feel even smaller than it is. I sadly ended up having my mom take back this awesome globe in the picture and moved the letters to my drawer to make this part of the room more spaced out-- a hard but necessary thing to do. also as the year went on I would rearrange baskets and boxes to acquire maximum space and use of the room!

2. tons of pictures and mementos from high school

bringing pictures of family, friends, your dog, and even letters and such are awesome and I brought a ton from home... but when I made college friends and wanted to display them on my wall there wasn't room and I didn't want to take down pictures of my highs school friends so it was a bit of a cluttered picture wall. and again dorm rooms are small and so bringing a box of all your high school memories is best left at home. but a few pictures and a few ticket stubs and such are great for making your room feel like home!

3. every single shoe I own

as a shoe lover, fanatic, collector, hoarder, I about brought ever single pair of shoes from my house to college... and my closet was not meant for all thousand of my shoes. I quickly learned that I would have to send many a pair back home which was hard... but again necessary. specifically I didn't need 5 pairs of tennis shoes, 3 pairs of heels, and several other unnecessary shoe options. all I needed was 2 pairs of tennis, and then one pair of some other shoes... like having so many options was actually exhausting.

4. extra office supplies

I absolutely am obsessed with pens, sticky notes, note pads, and all kinds of office supplies so I stocked up thinking that I would actually use all of it. alas I had WAY to many things that were just taking up space in my closet, desk, drawer, etc. so I advise take ~only~ what you need and then have your mom/ dad/ guardian mail you more stuff or go and buy more. it would just make it easier for you, I promise.

5. all the items of clothing

also as a clothing aficionado, I brought almost every t-shirt I owned, every pair of jeans, all of my shorts, and in the winter time all of my sweaters. while having all of the things was comforting for my range of outfit choices, it was not ideal for the limited closet space of a dorm room. my advice would be to take the items of clothing that you can wear in multiple ways to change the outfit look for different occasions. or you can be like me and bring everything you own and weed out the clothing you don't wear as you go (not recommended haha).

6. tall rain boots

I know this is oddly specific but for myself I would not suggest tall rain boots because; (1)they take up a lot of space, (2) not the most practical, (3)were hot and noisy when I went to class. for this next year I am personally going to purchase some short rain boots. for one, they're more stylish and will take up less space. also they won't make my legs hot when I go to class but will still keep my feet dry in the rain! they're super cute and very versatile and will go with everything!
